WOMEN LEADERSHIP
Recently I read in the newspaper
regarding USA presidential election 2016 and the candidates stood for it. Here
I have no intention to discuss about Bobby Jindal remarks on Indian American
origin. The most interesting topic is that the world biggest economy and the
most developed economy has only two women candidate in the list. One the very
famous Hillary Clinton, Former Secretary of State and wife of Former President
Bill Clinton and the other one Carly Fiorina who belongs to Business World
before she stepped in for election. Refer the candidates of 2016 below:
Well!!! This is not new in the
American history. Over a span of 239 years since it got freedom on 4th
July, 1776, we have not seen any women president. When a country like India,
Turkey, Ireland, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Canada, France, England and Germany have
embraced women presidents and prime ministers then why yet women are not
acceptable in American political system as supreme commando. Is this, the real
face of the most powerful nation who seeks for gender equality but still they
consider men as the strong gender to hold a post like-President of United
States of America?
Why women always been in the
testing laboratory and in spite they showcased their talent in all spheres
still they are questionable to take up big responsibilities. In AD 1236 Sultan
Iltutmish’s daughter, Raziyya became sultan because she was more capable than
her brothers as per chronicler “Minhaj –i-Siraj” records but she removed from
the throne in AD 1240. This incident of India’s medieval history shows the
mentality of men who cannot afford to see women super ceding them. Queen
Rudrama devi (AD 1262-1289), of the Kakatiya dynasty of Warangal (now a part of
modern Telangan) changed her name and pretended herself as a man in order to
rule without any revolts. Another Queen “Didda” who ruled in Kashmir from AD
980-AD 1003, her title comes from a word “didi”. If we look into our ancient
history, when women were the part of all sabhas and their opinions were also taken
into account, even then we have hardly seen any prominent women rulers in that
period. In modern times many social thinker came who fought for women
liberalisation, education, social scepticisms and freedom from seclusion. As a result women are taking competitive
challenges in the society today.
We all have heard about our first
Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi but how she became is quite interesting to
share. On a sudden death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, discussions were going on for
next PM. Morarji Desai was in a queue but all senior leaders of congress backed
Indira Gandhi with an expectation that she will follow their advice. Gradually,
however, Indira Gandhi attempted to assert her position within the government
and party. This independent way of working gave her much turbulence. One where
she needs to fight with “syndicate”, a group of powerful and influential
leaders from within the congress and on the other side she needs to work
towards regaining the congress prestige that lost in 1967 elections. All steps
taken by her and the personality she carried gave her “iron lady” name but in
reality she was fighting to let everybody know that women are not weak and
nobody can suppress her. This could be most probably gave her the feeling of
insecurity and henceforth, emergency came into force. Making error in a role is
significant and that error doesn’t look to the gender. Today there may be a hot
topic to discuss “whether emergency in India was actually needed or not during
Indira Gandhi regime?” in political arena but bygones are bygones and let’s
move forward with an intention for not making politics so personalised that our
politicians start poisoning each other in particular and country in general.
In the business world most
highlighted story in this respect was about Kiran Mazumdar Shaw who studied
fermentation science, and train to be a brew master like her father, a very
non-traditional field for a woman. She even looked for the scope in India but
didn’t get hired because “It’s a man work” here. She started Biocon India in
1978 after training in the same field from Scotland and Ireland. Initially she
faced a credibility challenges because she was young woman in an untested field,
even hiring a staff was a difficulty being a woman in the biotech business as a
lead. But she showed her stamina, courage, patience and belief; and as a result
her company become the first Indian company to export enzymes to Europe and
United States.
In the country like US where
women are more liberal, free and independent then why that economy not
engendered a single woman president yet? Why less women candidate stood for the
presidential election? Why not US media focused on this topic so far? Why can’t
a woman be a president and a world leader? These many questions are coming to
my mind. I have heard many past interviews of women candidates for president
ship and they themselves faced and said that they are always been highlighted
but men candidates are not so on a testing mode always. Women candidate need to
be vigilant, focused, smart all the time because everybody from media to masses
are of an opinion that women couldn’t fit to this highest responsibility. Anyways!!
Hillary Clinton managed to answer smartly to all twist and turn questions for
coming election. Now it’s time to give a serious thought by the US citizens’,
media persons and government on women leadership in their political system.
It’s a country where most talented people live even they hire from the other
countries. Hence, people themselves need to skilfully elicit the best woman
candidate for the post of President .Moreover, to make the “theory of choice”
happen many more woman candidate should stand for the election. It’s true that
President of US is not only country’s head but also a world leader and woman
can be the best option because she is not only a soft power but as well as a
hard power. The basic difference is simply that she knows when to use both the
powers.

Eye opener message.
